The distal shield is in constant extinction because the optic axis (c-axis) is perpendicular to the microscope stage, whereas the double-layer proximal shield and the tube cycle exhibit interference colours with inclined extinction.
The elliptical to sub-circular placolith consists of a distal plate composed of non-imbricated segments, a double-layered proximal shield, and a tube cycle supporting an axial cross with a hollow distal process.
Axopodorhabdus albianus is distinguished from other species of Axopodorhabdus by the presence of a well-separated, double-layered proximal shield.
