The circular to elliptical placoliths consist of single-tiered distal and proximal shields and a single tube cycle, all exhibiting inclined extinction and length-fast (-) elongation. The central area may be void or occupied by a delicate, non-permanent, or robust permanent cover, sometimes featuring a distal process or transverse bar. This family is placed in the order Coccolithales and suborder Reticulofenestraineae, as with all placolith families. However, in the literature, it is often classified in the non-coccolith-bearing order Isochrysidales.
