Staurolithites peristrefomeno Varol, in prep.
From the Greek peristrefomeno, meaning ‘rotated’, referring to the strongly rotated cross relative to the axis of the loxolith.
Species of Staurolithites are characterised by a zeugoid outer wall, a very narrow zeugoid inner wall, and a strongly rotated right-angle cross that supports a distal process.
In plan view under XPL, the outer wall is in constant extinction because the optic axis (c-axis) is perpendicular to the microscope stage, whereas the inner wall and the cross display white interference colours.
