Denisea, a new genus of Paleocene calcareous nannofossils

Osman Varol

Abstract

The new genus Denisea is introduced based on robust and stringent criteria after examining different profiles of the Paleocene samples in the mobile mount. The criteria include the birefringent optical character of the shields as a direct result of their high inclination angles and the development of the tube cycle. Three new species of Denisea are identified based on the subcircular to elliptical outline: Denisea atalikii, Denisea salleyi and Denisea turkmenii. New circular species of Denisea include three large (>9.0µm) species, Denisea constricta, Denisea magna and Denisea polymegalo and one medium-size (5.0-9.0µm) species, Denisea foramena. In addition to the above new species, three species are re-combined into Denisea; Denisea aliquanta, Denisea orbis and Denisea subpertusa. The stratigraphic ranges of the new species are presented.
