Final Epithet
Hattneria cryptochondrus (Stover, 1966) Varol, n. comb.
Basionym

Discolithus cryptochondrus Stover, 1966

Synonyms

non Rhabdolithus anthophorus Deflandre, 1959

Reinhardtites anthophorus (Deflandre, 1959) Perch-Nielsen, 1968

Remarks

Species of Hattneria having a distinct central opening. The width of the pelaga [wall and distal plate lining] is about equal to the width of the central opening. The bridge appears slightly diagonal and illuminated under polarized light. The fluted structures are distinct under a light microscope.

Hattner & Wise (1980) demonstrated that the form illustrated by Bramlette & Martini (1964), Sissingh (1977) and other authors only had vestigial calyx and did not correspond to the holotype of Deflandre.

The forms conventionally known as R. anthophorus should be assigned to (Hattneria elegans Gartner, 1968) Varol, n. comb. or (Hattneria cryptochondrus Stover, 1966) Varol, n. comb.

The forms having a birefringent inner wall with large openings and massive distal process supporting well-developed calyx (with eight petal-like segments) should be assigned to Reinhardtites anthophorus. These forms currently erroneously assigned to Zeugrhabdotus presigmoides Burnett (1997).
