Basionym

Cyclolithus prionion Deflandre & Fert, 1954

Synonyms

Umbilicosphaera nitescens Kamptner, 1963

Coronocyclus nitescens (Kamptner, 1963) Bramlette and Wilcoxon, 1967

Coronocyclus serratus Hay, Mohler & Wade, 1966

Cyclococcolithus marginatus Jerkovic, 1971

Description

Circular species of Coronocyclus having a narrow pelaga [<2.0µm] and a wide central opening without any structure. The tube cycle bears spines. The proximal shield is made up of strongly imbricated chevron-like segments. The entire species is strongly birefringent in polarised light.

Remarks

Coronocyclus prionion differs from Coronocyclus latus (da Gama & Varol, 2013) Varol emend. by having a pelaga less than 2.0µm in width. It distinguished from Coronocyclus baileyi da Gama & Varol (2013) by being circular rather than elliptical.
