Coccolithineae
Circular to elliptical placoliths with either a single tube cycle (e.g., Coccolithaceae) or double tube cycles (e.g., Prinsiaceae). The distal shield exhibits constant extinction in plan view, indicating a vertical optic axis relative to the microscope stage. The proximal shield is double-tiered: its upper tier displays constant extinction, similar to the distal shield, while the lower tier has an inclined optic axis and exhibits length-fast (-) elongation.
